A dead dog found in the River Wandle has been left to decompose after the council and the Environment Agency refused to remove it.
Residents of Island House, in Wandle Road, Morden, who have to cross the river to go to work, were alarmed to discover the dog's corpse by the bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Iaysha Lowery, a nursery worker who lives by the river, said: "That part of the river is quite dirty. But you can see its black fur, back legs and tail. It could be a staffie."
"It is still in the river and starting to smell really bad. The poor dog has been through enough. I don't believe it should be left there."
Housing by the River Wandle where the dog was found
The RSPCA has launched an appeal for information about the dog's death but have not moved the dead animal because the body was too decomposed to show any suspicious cause of death.
Merton Council said it was not its responsibility to move the dog because the River Wandle is maintained by the Environment Agency.
But the Environment Agency have also shirked responsibility, saying it will not move the dog because it does not pose a flood risk and is not causing significant pollution.
An RSPCA spokesperson said: "We urge anyone with any information about how this poor animal came to be in this state to call us on 0300 1234 999."
