The driver who killed police officer Andrew Duncan in a hit and run has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years.

Gary Bromige, also known as Gary Cody, of Holland Road in South Norwood was driving at more than 80mph in Reigate Avenue, Rosehill, Sutton, when he knocked down PC Duncan in the early hours of Friday, September 20.

Bromige, 25, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, causing death while unlicensed, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident at Kingston Crown Court on December 20.

He was sentended today at the same court.

PC Duncan, from East Molesey, was carrying out a routine traffic operation in Reigate Avenue when he and his colleagues spotted a black Volkswagen Golf driving at speed. PC Duncan tried to stop the car, being driven by Bromige, but it drove into him, catapulting him 30 metres along the road.

Married father-of-two PC Duncan, who had been a police officer since 1990, was taken to hospital but died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, September 22.

After hitting PC Duncan, Bromige sped off in the direction of the Rosehill roundabout. The car was found abandoned in Hyde Walk later that morning. Bromige was arrested after handing himself in at Wandsworth Police station on September 20.

He appeared in front of Croydon magistrates on Monday, September 23. The court heard Bromige phone his dad after the collision and said: "Oh s*** I have done it now, I have hit a copper."

Following Bromige's guilty plea, Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane said: "On the night of A funeral was held for PC Duncan in East Molesey on October 11. The funeral cortège was escorted to St Mary's Church by police outriders from PC Duncan's unit and uniformed police officers provided a guard of honour as the coffin was carried into the church.

Among the guests at the funeral were London Mayor Boris Johnson and Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Horgan-Howe.
