An innovative housing development could soon be seen on Mitcham’s streets as new plans are announced for the Clay Avenue area.

A total of 36 units that slot together like a puzzle could be built by the end of this year if planning approval is given for the homes near to Mitcham Eastfields station.

A public consultation will be held on Friday, January 17 for members of the public to view plans for the homes YMCA London South West claim are the first of its kind in the country.

Applicants YMCA London South West, state the pre-fabricated flats will be self contained and offer affordable accommodation for single people and couples in housing need.

Andy Redfearn, their director of housing and development, said: "This is the first time in the country that this scheme is being used and we think there will be a lot of national interest in it.

"It is de-skilled, with no bricks and mortar - we could clad it in mock Tudor or tiles, or maybe pebble dash.

"When people think of pre-fab houses they think of the 1960s but it is not like that."

The YMCA is aiming to submit a planning application to Merton Council in February and if approval is given, could open the units for people to move into by the end of the year.

Residents of the three storey blocks known as Y:Cube Housing, would be referred through the YMCA, and would previously have been tenants in hostels and other short stay housing schemes such as the YMCA Wimbledon on The Broadway.

Mr Redfearn said the scheme would be open to people in receipt of benefits, and residents would typically stay there for three to five years before moving onto more permanent accommodation.

There would be a community garden where people could grow fruit and vegetables, and a flat made available for a member of staff.

The consultation will be held the Acacia Centre in Grove Road, Mitcham, on Friday, January 17 from 3pm to 8pm.
