Students of Harris Academy Merton donated a generous offering of supplies to a food bank in an effort to give something back to the community.

Reverend Gerry Stanton, of Pollards Hill Baptist Church, was presented with the students' donations last Friday.

Students generated donations by raiding their food stores in order to provide for the local community.

Leo Gilbert, principal of the Academy, said: "They worked incredibly hard to collect more than 1100 kg of food in only two weeks.

"All credit to them - it shows how determined, caring and enterprising they are, especially our sixth form students who drove the project."

Pollards Hill Baptist Church has recently become a centre of distribution for the Food Bank.

The church opens its doors every Wednesday where the donations are distributed amongst those in need of emergency food and support.
