A group in Morden that offers a range of facilities free of charge for disadvantaged adults has been nominated for a Merton Civic Award.

Careers advice, work programmes and free training for adults who may have missed the opportunity to attend school, are all some of the resources provided by Exchange Group in Morden library.

The group has been nominated for the Business Award for its contribution to the community as a valuable resource for Morden residents.

Centre manager Joanna Subik said: “Being nominated for this award is just great.”

The branch, based in Morden library in Merton Council civic centre, gives people the chance to develop new skills and qualifications to increase their employability.

Learners keen to gain new skills or develop current ones such as IT, maths or English, to change jobs can also benefit from the facilities.

Those currently unemployed can also get help with CVs, personal statements and interview techniques.

Lisa Pirrett, operations manager for the company, said: “I really believe in what they are doing.

“They have done a brilliant job and they really deserve this award.”

Completely Government-funded, the unit is open six days a week and is available to everyone at no cost.

So far this year, 300 individuals have received help from the group and 90 per cent of all clients have gone on to successfully gain qualifications recognised by employers.
