Seven of Merton’s leading men have signed up to a campaign pledging their support for victims of domestic abuse.
Spearheaded by the council’s Safer Merton team, the campaign is asking for more men to step forward as "champions" and act as "role models" against domestic abuse.
Champions will be asked to listen to victims of abuse, both men and women, answer any questions and signpost people to relevant services.
Explaining why the campaign has been led by men Councillor Maxi Martin, cabinet member for children’s services, said: "All victims, whether male or female should know there are people they can approach in confidence.
"Men and the way they view domestic abuse are fundamentally important to reducing domestic abuse and increasing reporting by supporting other men as well as women to report abuse."
Those already signed up to be male champions are Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of the council, Ged Curran chief executive of the council, Wayne Hainsworth, chief executive of Merton Priory Homes, Rev Andrew Wakefield, Councillor David Simpson, Jeff Lisle from the London Fire Brigade and Dave Palmer from Merton Police.
