Customers at Tesco pitched in to help families in need this Christmas by donating to a food bank.

A collection at the Raynes Park store over the weekend, saw customers given a special shopping list when they entered the store.

They were asked to pick up an item of food such as long-life milk, cereal, tinned foods and tea and coffee before donating it at the end of their shop.

Tesco topped up all total donations by 30 per cent.

MP for Wimbledon, Stephen Hammond, said: "Foodbanks were established about 10 years ago to help people at a time of emergency need.

"This was the second year I joined the collection and I want to thank so many local people for their generosity as well as all the volunteers for their time"

Jim, store manager at the Raynes Park Tesco, said: "In the run up to Christmas we wanted to do our bit to feed those in need and the volunteers we had in the store from the two charities were fantastic.

"Our customers were incredibly generous and I would like to thank them all for their support."

The event was run in partnership with the Trussel Trust and charity FareShare who will distribute donations a local food back or depot to be given to people in need.
