Independent business owners are set to get a boost by taking inspiration from their American counterparts.
Small Business Saturday is held in the States on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving since 2010 and is an initiative which aims to encourage people to shop at local independent enterprises.
The UK version will take place on December 7 - regarded as one of the busiest shopping days of the year - which Merton Council has chosen to back.
Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of the council, said: "Local high streets and small businesses are a hub for our communities and research shows that every £1 spent with a local small business means that 63p is re-spent locally.
"I would encourage everyone to shop in our small businesses during the festive season, particularly on Small Business Saturday.
"As well as providing good service and value, our local small businesses are a lovely place to shop and offer great variety."
Coun Alambritis will be visiting a number of businesses during the day to help serve their customers.
