The head of a charity is heading to South Africa to spread the message of recycling.

Monica Tyler, chief executive of the Vine Project, is running a week-long workshop from October 5 as part of the Third Annual Tutu Peace Lecture in Cape Town.

The Vine Project, set up in the 1990s to recycle unwanted furniture, opened its first shop in the St Nicholas Centre in Sutton in December last year and the Chief Executive, Monica, is going to Africa to explain about the work they do.

She said: "I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to represent the Vine Project and I’m very much looking forward to the trip. I will be running a workshop to explain what we do and why.

Residents are being urged to donate a gift to the cause such as an item of clothing or a sweet treat, then tie it up with a ribbon and a card reading ‘Leah’s gift from the Tutu Foundation UK’. Then take it along to either of the Vine Project’s addresses.

The Vine Project works closely with the Tutu Foundation UK which officially invited Monica to the Peace Lecture.

Tutu Foundation UK Chief Executive, Alex Ankrah, said: "The Tutu Foundation UK offers support to people who want to get involved in helping build stronger communities.

"We are thrilled to be offering our Ubuntu Community Peer Coaching qualification to staff and volunteers at the Vine Project and of course look forward to working closely with Monica and her team in the coming months."

Councillor Colin Hall, Deputy Leader of Sutton Council, said: "We are delighted that the work of The Vine Project has been recognised in this way. Sutton Council and The Vine Project share a belief in recycling and reusing as much as possible."

If you would like to send a gift, simply take your pillow case along to The Vine Project shop in St Nicholas Centre, Sutton town centre or The Vine Project warehouse, Unit 3, 24 Wandle Way, Willow Lane Industrial Estate, Mitcham, Surrey, CR4 4NB
