The water company for Sutton, Morden, Epsom and Croydon says they are going to run out of water in the next 25 years due to population growth and climate change.

A draft water resources management plan by Sutton and East Surrey Water states they need to find new sources of water and in the future will need water from Thames Water.

The plan explains how they propose to ensure they always have enough water to supply to their customers for the next 25 years.

The report says they will have to compulsory meter customers as well as providing water to South East Water.

They also need to enlarge their surface reservoir at Bough Beech, in Kent, and lower their leakage.

The plan stresses that customers need to learn to use less water.

Lester Sonden the engineering director Sutton and East Surrey Water said: “The recent drought is a key example of how water companies in the South East are facing increasing pressures which will challenge our ability to maintain public water supplies.

“Sutton and East Surrey Water is working with these companies, the Environment Agency and other stakeholders to identify solutions which will minimise the impact upon customers’ water supply bills while protecting important habitats.

“As part of this work, we have looked at how any surpluses developed could be used to help supply neighbouring companies.”

Sutton and East Surrey is holding a public meeting on the June 25 at Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate Hill, from 9.30am to explain the plan and to invite questions.
