Prepare yourself for an evening of insightful observational comedy - looking into what makes women tick - and the opportunity to witness a star in action.

The irrepressible Hormonal Housewives is back and at the New Wimbledon Theatre on April 19, featuring the fantastic Toyah Willcox, who describes the show as ‘like Al Murray in drag’.

Toyah, 55, famous for 80s singles ‘It’s A Mystery’ and ‘I Want To Be Free’, describes the stage show as: "Very light-hearted, and incredibly funny.

"It seems to have just caught the audience’s imagination in the right way.

She says: "It’s absolutely fantastic and it’s tending to sell out everywhere. As soon as we had our first night the show came alive, because you need the audience for a show like this - the laughs tend to be major eruptions rather than small flitters, it’s absolutely massive eruptions.

"It’s had a huge response.

I think it’s because it isn’t feminism and it isn’t political, it’s just a pure celebration of women, and it’s very naughty. It’s like Chaucer for women."

The show tours for two and a half months, visiting 67 venues around the country, but Toyah believes that the spontaneity of each show keeps it fresh.

She says: "This is done very much like stand-up comedy - we’re all playing ourselves as well as other characters and we talk about our own experiences.

"I’ve never done anything like this and comedy takes a lot of brain power because you’re always having to sense the individuality of the audience.

"I really like that it’s a brainteaser every night, nothing about this show feels repetitive.

"I’ve got punch line after punch line, I mean I’ve literally got a punch line every five lines, we all have, that’s why it’s so clever."

The show is written by Julie Coombe, who also acts in it alongside Sarah Jane Buckley, famous for playing Kathy Barnes in Hollyoaks.

Toyah and the girls visit the Wimbledon Theatre on April 19, but she’ll be hoping for a smoother evening than the last time she was in town.

She says: "I’ve done Peter Pan twice at Wimbledon and I remember on the very first night my flywire got caught and I got dragged up with the scenery, it was the only time in my career when the show had to be stopped so I could be unhooked. Fortunately nothing like that can happen in this production."
