A renovated pub has gone back to its roots and planted allotments in its beer garden as part of creating a sustainable community hub.

The Charles Holden, formerly the Colliers Tup, will open its unusual garden area tomorrow, with Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhan McDonagh set to plant the very first vegetables on Saturday.

Peter Linacre, managing director of the New Pub Company, which owns the Charles Holden, hopes the community will get involved in the garden by volunteering to help maintain it.

He said: “That is what pubs are for; to be in the community, reflecting what a community looks like.

“Everything will be as locally sourced as it can be.

"We are using the Wildmoor Smokery in Worcestershire, farmers from Surrey and Berkshire and selling beer made as close as possible.”

The produce grown in the allotments will also be used in the Charles Holden’s meals, while micro-breweries Clarence and Frederick’s and Cronx in Croydon, and By the Horns brewery in Wimbledon will be used.

Mr Linacre promised the pub, named after one of the most famous British architects of the 20th century, would work with community group Making Colliers Wood Happy Residents Association.

The Big Weekend launch will be used as a fundraiser for the Colliers Wood Spring Festival and will begin at 4pm tomorrow with an ale festival.

Other activities over the weekend include a cupcake sale, bouncy castle, face painting, food stalls, Sunday roast offers and complementary wine for evening guests.
