A company so concerned about a dangerous "death trap" junction has offered to pay to erect a one way sign.

Staff at Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking, whose head office in based in Pepys Road, Raynes Park, first informed the council of their concerns in 2008.

Since then staff have recorded dozens of occasions when they have seen cars travelling the wrong way on the one-way system.

Most recently staff witnessed a food delivery van driving the wrong way narrowly miss a car turning into Pepys road.

Joan Halley, manager at the office, said: "It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

"We can only assume that the cars are turning right out of Wyke Road, where the one way nature of the road isn’t very obvious, or even coming under the railway bridge from Approach Road or along the High St/Coombe Road.

"They’re always travelling at quite a speed and it’s only a matter of time before one collides with a vehicle turning right or left into Pepys Road from Worple Road as these cars travel at quite a speed also."

Such is their frustration that the company has even offered to pay for the sign themselves.

After years of complaints by the company, Merton Council said this week it would look again at signage in the area.

Councillor Andrew Judge, cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration said: "We will review the signage at the junction and ensure the direction of travel is made completely clear to motorists."
