Epsom and St Helier hospital trust rated best in south-west London by independent report

Epsom and St Helier boss, Matthew Hopkins: "We still need to improve" Epsom and St Helier boss, Matthew Hopkins: "We still need to improve"

A new report shows that Epsom and St Helier hospitals are providing some of the highest quality care in the region.

The report allows patients to see how hospitals measure up against one another and was compiled by the independent health consultancy - MHP Health Mandate.

Mary Burstow, chairwoman of the health and well being scrutiny committee, said:  “I am so proud of all the staff at Epsom and St Helier hospitals for once again demonstrating what an excellent job they do.

"They really are the best in south-west.

“These figures go to demonstrate how daft BSBV are for wanting to close Epsom and St Helier’s A&E and maternity service.”

The hospitals are measured against 10 standards including formal complaints and whether patients felt they experienced good care.

The trust’s overall score of 91 out of 146 hospitals was the highest ranking in south-west London and north Surrey.

Matthew Hopkins, the trust’s chief executive, said: “These findings contain some fantastic results for our hospitals but we recognise that at 91st in the country there are many aspects of our service we need to improve.

“But what the report does do is highlight our performance in both national and local terms.

"We recognise that there is work to do on a national scale but we are very pleased that we are also recognised as providing the best patient care of any Trust in south west London and north Surrey.

“And of course, we are delighted that local people can now compare the strengths and weaknesses of their local hospital more easily than before.”

When compared against other trusts in south west London and Surrey only Royal Surrey and Frimley hospitals did better.

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said: “This is brilliant news and a feather in the cap for the trust's staff who work so hard on behalf of patients.

“It also demonstrates once again the madness of BSBV's plans to close our A&E and maternity.

"What is the logic in downgrading one of the best hospitals in the region?”

The rankings in full:

Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals – 115

Croydon Hospital – 140

Epsom and St Helier hospitals – 91

Frimley Park Hospital– 5

Kingston Hospital – 97

Royal Surrey County Hospital – 86

St George’s Hospital – 141

Surrey and Sussex hospitals – 124

I am a great fan of Epsom General Hospital. My children & some grandchildren were born there. I have had operations & other procedures done there. They have always been fantastic.
BUT, now it has come to the point that if I am taken ill, I am 64, the odds are that I will be transported to South London, despite living less than a mile from EGH.
That is so wrong. Epsom A&E was upgraded, twice, over recent years to serve locals as well as M25 casualties. But now it is downgraded, in all but name. Save Epsom General Hospital & ALL of it's services.

As a haematology patient for life at the once excellent St. Helier Hospital I have found over the past year and specifically today that their services have been wrecked by the management changes. The Patient phones their clinical nurse specialist for advice but now instead of being checked over and treated in outpatients you are told to phone your GP or join the queue in A&E and they are no longer permitted to admit their regular haematology patients to the B1 haematology ward. I've just phoned my GPs at 3pm, no booked appointments for a week and they are all in a meeting until 4.30pm to speak on the phone if I can find the voice to do it. I am ANGRY. It must be even tougher on those who cannot speak up for themselves. The management changes made at St. Helier are producing a RUBBISH service and it's not the fault of the hard pressed, reduced in numbers staff.

Woohoo, we came 91st and all of the others came below us!

I mean really guys, this reads like all of the hospitals in the area are way below par. The BSBV docs must think it proves their point.
