Olympic rowing champion Sophie Hosking's gold post box wrapped up for plaque unveiling in Wimbledon

A post box painted gold in honour of Wimbledon’s Olympic champion Sophie Hosking will soon be adorned with a plaque to commemorate her legendary achievement.

Concerned residents contacted the Wimbledon Guardian after they noticed the post box – outside Sainsburys and Elys in Worple Road, Wimbledon, was wrapped up in cellophane.

But Royal Mail has confirmed the gold postbox is here to stay and will also include a plaque with information about Miss Hosking winning gold in the women’s double lightweight sculls with Kat Copeland in last summer’s Olympic Games.

A spokesman said: “Residents need not worry – the gold postbox isn’t going anywhere.

“In fact all the 122 gold post boxes will remain gold and will have installed plaques. We expect Sophie Hosking will help us unveil the plaque at the end of the month.

“Until then we are refurbishing them.”

After winning Olympic gold, Hosking told the Wimbledon Guardian her first love will always be football – she is a die-hard AFC Wimbledon fan and even had the team’s blue and yellow colours painted on her fingernails during her victory in August 2012.
