A person has died after being hit by a train at Wimbledon Station.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at about 11am.

Lines through Wimbledon have reopened but delays of up to 60 minutes and cancellations are expected to continue until 4pm.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers from BTP and Metropolitan Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 11.08am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Medics from the London Ambulance Service also attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the person and inform their family.

"A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

Passenger tickets are being accepted on alternative Southern, London Underground and London Buses routes.

Network Rail Incident Response staff were lifting a black body bag off the tracks and onto the platform full of awaiting police as I arrived on the district line.

Very true. When I drove past the station at midday there were ten British Transport Police vehicles there. As BTP are almost always double crewed that makes 20 officers for one incident, many more than usually allocated to such incidents.
