Head of Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Local Pharmaceutical Committee to scale Kilimanjaro for Age UK

A pharmacist is taking on mount Kilimanjaro for charity Age UK.

Raj Patel, chairman of Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Local Pharmaceutical Committee is an ardent campaigner of using pharmacies as community resources, something Age UK firmly believes in.

Next month, on February 16, Mr Patel will climb 5895 metres up Africa's highest mountain.

Mr Patel recently opened the Mount Elgon Pharmacy, on Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton which he is using as a collection point for the charity climb.

Last week Mr Patel visited Age UK in Sutton to show the team the equipment he will be using.

Age UK chief executive officer Marion Harper, said: "Unfortunately even though we tried we could not get his sleeping bag back into its container. Even something as simple as this can prove hugely challenging at high altitude."

"We very much want the local community to get involved, local schools to host fun events, a sponsored skip, a cake sale or a quiz night at the local pub. All ideas would be warmly welcomed."
