A swimming teacher who for 24 years taught thousands of children and adults to swim has died.

Sidney Shephard, from Raynes Park, died on Saturday night at the age of 66 after a seven week battle with cancer.

Mr Shephard and his wife Jean founded the Dolphin Swim School at Wimbledon College in 1989, later expanding to provide classes in both Mitcham and Upper Norwood.

Tracey McMillan, a family friend, said: "A lot of people in the swimming world are where they are today because of Sid and they are all very proud to have known him."
