Merton Winter Night Shelter sees churches band together to help the homeless
Faith groups have banded together to provide a shelter for homeless people during the cold winter months.
The YMCA’s Merton Winter Night Shelter project is split between six churches, a synagogue and a mosque for the first six weeks, who have agreed to turn their halls into a shelter for 12 homeless people each day.
Talat Malik, the secretary of Wimbledon mosque, based in Ryfold Road, Wimbledon Park, said they do not have a hall but their members volunteered every Tuesday at the Salvation Army in Kingston Road, Wimbledon.
He said: “The mosque’s management has changed and we now have a different committee.
“This is the first year has got involved and we’re looking to do a lot more in the community in future. We hope to feed 80 people in future.”
