By Kevin O'Byrne

West Wimbledon Primary School is a popular and well regarded primary, with a widely respected base for children on the autistic spectrum in need of extra educational support.

National Government insists on grouping all the school's children together when assessing SAT results, so the newly published great results are even more impressive in that context and a massive commendation for all at the school.

We have been confident that the school supports all our pupils to become caring, thoughtful, and well grounded young people; confident and ready for secondary school.

The academic measures point to excellent attainment and ambitious progress during their time at the school.

There is great working together by parents and carers and staff with the children at the centre. The culture is extremely positive. It is a great environment for learning.

On behalf of the Governors I would like to congratulate the kids for trying their very best and achieving; the supportive families; our brilliant hardworking staff; and our exceptional headteacher Carey Neil. We could not ask for better leadership or a more caring, more engaged headteacher. Our successes were designed, built and inspired by her, and there are still more to come.

I hope the 2012 SATs can be seen in the appropriate and specific context for each Merton school, based on their own set of strengths and challenges, and the particular difficulties of education in 2012.

These metrics should be a useful force for good. They need context to have real meaning and real value.

Happy Christmas to all the pupils and all the educators in Merton.

Kevin Byrne is the acting Chairman of Governors at West Wimbledon Primary School
