Car crash outside South Wimbledon Tube Station causing traffic chaos
Police have closed the A219 Merton Road after a woman flipped her car onto its side rounding a corner outside South Wimbledon station.
The driver, who is believed to be in her 30s, was turning from Kingston Road right into Morden Road at about 6.30am when the grey Vauxhall Corsa flipped onto its side.
Police fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene, but when the officers from Wimbledon Fire Station arrived they found members of the public had righted the car, with the woman still at the wheel.
Andy McKay, watch manager said: “I appreciate people are in a rush and may have wanted to get the vehicle out of the way, but I would stress that in a situation where a woman has been jolted onto her side, there is immediately the consideration of potential spine injury, and our advice would be to not move her until trained paramedics had the chance to assess her.
“In a situation like this I would stress that people should leave the incident to be dealt with by the emergency services.”
The woman was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a priority with neck pain for a further check-up Police remain at the scene and the incident is causing major traffic issues in the surrounding area.
A diversion route is being suggested along Merantum Way.
