A man has been arrested after a dramatic high speed police chase last night.

Police were called to Hazelwood Avenue in Morden at about 4.50pm on October 25 to reports of a burglary in progress.

As police arrived a man was seen fleeing the scene in a black stolen BMW down St Helier Avenue and was pursued by up to 10 police cars.

One eyewitness, Leanne Lambourne, said he was driving at speeds of at least 100mph and was flashing his lights at other motorists as he drove on the wrong side of the road to force them out of his way.

After pulling over to avoid him she said she had missed colliding with him by millimetres. The speeding motorist continued into London Road in Sutton where he collided with another BMW.

No one was seriously injured but still the driver failed to stop and continued into Tatton Close in Sutton where he left the vehicle and was pursued on foot.

A 41-year-old man was later arrested in Tatton Close by a Merton police officer on suspicion of burglary, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

One woman who witnessed his arrest said: "They stopped at the back of my garden and caught him near London Road.

"They were saying he was caught in the middle of a robbery.

"They had two dogs out with them and got him in an alley way.”

He remains in custody at a South London police station.
