Strictly Come Dancing will not be investigated following viewer complaints after the first dance-off of the show was cancelled.

The BBC One programme came under fire after American singer Anastacia landed in the bottom two but was unable to dance again after suffering a tear to scar tissue from a double mastectomy, meaning Melvin Odoom was automatically sent home.

A spokesman for broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said: “We assessed six complaints claiming it was unfair that Anastacia’s injury stopped the dance-off and that, as a result, Melvin Odoom was voted off the show.

“However, we don’t regard this as a regulatory matter: the bottom two acts were determined by the voting audience.”

DJ and TV presenter Melvin did not have the chance to perform to keep his place in the show as the rules of Strictly state that the couple with the fewest viewer votes should be eliminated.

Following his exit, he tweeted: “I have really enjoy my @bbcstrictly experience … I have had so much fun and want to thank everyone for their support! #teamjboom.”

The show has made headlines with the sudden departure of singer Will Young, who announced he was leaving due to “personal reasons”.

This weekend saw television presenter Laura Whitmore unable to perform due to an ankle injury and professional dancer Brendan Cole missed the show due to illness.

Brendan, who is partnered with Anastacia, has been suffering with a lung infection and missed rehearsals last week after being admitted to hospital.

Anastacia danced instead with Gorka Marquez and the couple earned a solid score of 30 for their quickstep to Frank Sinatra’s My Kind Of Town.

Sports presenter Ore Oduba was at the top of the leaderboard with 36 points, while Ed Balls was in the bottom position with just 18 points.

Former shadow chancellor Ed has remained in the show due to huge public support, even though he came close to dropping his professional partner, Katya Jones, during a lift on Saturday.

Lesley Joseph became the fifth celebrity to be voted off the dancefloor on Sunday, after the judges chose to save Daisy Lowe in the dance-off.

The celebrities are gearing up for the Halloween spectacular when the show returns this weekend.
