Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher has reportedly said he doesn’t think the British Soap Awards are important and he isn’t bothered if he wins one.
The actor, who plays Andy Sugden on the ITV soap, told the Daily Star that the gongs don’t necessarily reflect talent.
He is quoted as saying: “I don’t think the British Soap Awards are important at all.
“Every producer aims to win awards and win critical acclaim and prizes for the storyline and actors. That’s what they go for. But I think that wrongly takes away from what the show is doing.”
Kelvin, 32, said he has “no real aspiration” to win any awards and is more focussed on putting out a great product.
The actor said Emmerdale, which he joined in 1996, has often missed out on accolades that it deserved.
“It has been without doubt the best show for the past three years, maybe more,” he insisted.
“I don’t think they always necessarily showcase the best stuff. The recipients are certainly deserving but I don’t think the awards are always a true reflection.”
This year’s British Soap Awards will take place on May 28.
