The life of fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been celebrated with a star-studded private viewing of his work.

TV personality Jodie Kidd, who recently laughed off suggestions she was in line for the Top Gear job after Jeremy Clarkson’s axe, made an appearance at the event in a chic all-white suit.

Graham Norton and former Made In Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh were also among the guests who paid their respects to McQueen at the V&A museum in London.

The Savage Beauty exhibition is presented in a series of 10 rooms devoted to different stages of McQueen’s work.

Millie shone in a silver gown with a plunging neckline, and completed her look with halo braids, even if she did look like she was probably a bit chilly.

And Graham Norton went all out in an striking suit with silk panelling.

McQueen may have left school at 16 but he quickly rose through the fashion industry to become one of the world’s leading designers. He was 40 when he committed suicide the day before his mum’s funeral after struggling with depression.

But of course the fashion house that bears his name remains hugely influential.

Model Olivia Inge said of the exhibition: “You are taken into McQueen’s world, and when you’re in there, the whole world doesn’t actually exist.

“It’s an emotional journey through the chronology of his work and how they’ve done it is quite beautiful, it’s a wonderful experience.”

Martin Roth, director of the V&A, said: “I am thrilled that this magnificent show has come to London and feel passionately that the V&A is its natural home.

“Lee Alexander McQueen presented his work here during his lifetime and studied the museum’s wide-ranging public collections of tailoring, painting, art, photography and books as inspiration for his visionary designs, yet remained vigorously anti-establishment and a true provocateur.”
