The stars of Monsters: Dark Continent had to deal with sandstorms during filming.

The sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2010 film Monsters was shot in Jordan, and the cast and crew had to battle the harsh elements.

Kyle Soller, who plays Inkelaar, admitted: “It was like filming on another planet. Nobody knew what to expect. There were situations that came up like the sand storm or the intense heat when you’re in a full kit of military uniform with the backpack, helmet, heavy gun and heavy boots.

“I had to run for five minutes in the desert because it would make a really cool shot, which it does.”

Director Tom Green added: “The whole film was shot in four-and-a-half weeks and we had four weeks filming in Jordan and four days in Detroit. When we did get hit with sandstorms, it wasn’t like there were a load of trailers around the back that we could climb into so we were really up against it and working against the elements with this one,” the filmmaker said.

“We were pretty bold. I don’t know how I did it and if you asked me to do it all over again, I probably wouldn’t know how to. But you’ve got to go in being bold and fearless and just deal with the harsh conditions and just power through to come out with a film.”

Tom enjoyed shooting in Jordan, where the cast including Johnny Harris and Game Of Thrones’ Joe Dempsie, along with the crew, were welcomed by the local community.

“Jordan is the most wonderful place to film in, and the people there were amazing to us,” he said.

“We worked with tribes and communities and put the actors amongst the communities and tried to find narratives around those rather than having structured pieces and working from script.

“It was all a really incredible life experience – we worked in refugee towns as well and the place has its own story within it as well so I hope that soul comes across to the audience.”

Monsters: Dark Continent is in cinemas now.
