Meghan Trainor has said no other pop star could have sung her track All About That Bass, because they are all “size zero”.
The singer-songwriter has enjoyed massive success with her song about embracing your body curves, and said she was the right person to perform it.
Asked if she knew it would be such a hit, Meghan said: “As a songwriter, I went to my favourite songwriters and they said, ‘How do you know you had a hit?’ and I said, ‘It’s the ones you never guess, it’s ones you never know’. With that song, I thought it was a cool song, whatever, but I didn’t think anyone was gonna hear it.
“No other pop star could sing it because they’re all size zero and no one can rap and sing, so I had to sing it.”
The singer admitted it is still strange hearing her song in public.
She said: “I remember the only time that I got really weirded out was when I was home on my island and I went to a sushi place. I walked in and Lips Are Movin’ was playing and five minutes later All About That Bass played, and then Lips played again. I thought ‘Damn I’m famous. Like, it’s real’.
Meghan signed her record deal just under a year ago and since then has gone from being unknown to Grammy nominated.
She said it has been “epic”, adding: “A person who makes music only dreams… Dreams in life are to get Grammys. And I’ve done that, and I’m just 21.
“To win it is a whole other game but just to be nominated, for the rest of my life, I’ll be introduced as ‘Grammy nominated Meghan Trainor’.”
