This week, customers at the FishClub in Battersea are in for a colourful surprise.
Rather than old newspaper, they will be able to take their fish and chips home lovingly wrapped in a unique piece of art.
They will also find the walls and tables at the popular chippie covered in art, all courtesy of young British illustrator and printmaker Jess Wilson - the FishClub’s first ever Artist-in-Residence.
Miss Wilson herself will be in the shop on Friday, drawing portraits for customers as they queue.
Her project, entitled ‘Today’s fish and chip paper, tomorrow’s art’, was commissioned by the Affordable Art Fair, in an effort to dispel art’s reputation as an elitist, unaffordable luxury, and make it more accessible to the average person.
The Fair brings its "art for everyone" ethos to Battersea October until Sunday, exhibiting and selling contemporary art from £40 to £4000.
Those who would rather snap up a piece for free can do so this week at the FishClub, where, in honour of the project, one of the week’s specials is the aptly named Jackson Pollock and Chips.
For Miss Wilson, making art more accessible is good for artists too. She said: "Sometimes as an artist it’s so easy to lock yourself in your studio.
"The great thing about a project like this is that you put yourself in a new environment, get to know new people, and get inspired by that."
FishClub co-owner Steven Orme said. "Jess’s art is terrific, and though this has always been a lively place, her project has injected a whole new life into it. Our regulars love having her here and so do we."
