Award winning comedian Alex Horne is taking a different approach to his latest show by telling the truth about his lies, writes Andy Bloss.
Fresh from performing at the Edinburgh Festival, Horne brings his brand new show Lies to Croydon later this month.
The popular comedian, who created The Horne Section on BBC Radio 4 to much acclaim and presented Nevermind the Buzzcocks in 2012, put a slightly different twist on his new show.
Gone are the PowerPoint presentations he is widely known for. Instead be prepared for something a little different; a homage to fabrication.
He will be using audio recordings of famous voices, including Michael Caine, Andre Agassi and Cherie Blair, who will have conversations with him as part of his set.
The comedian has won Perrier Comedy Awards and Chortle Awards but this is the first time he has done a show just to talk about himself truthfully.
Horne says he likes the fact he does not have to tell the truth during his shows.
He says: "I realised some time ago that barely a word I say on stage is true. At first this made me uncomfortable; I wasn’t sure I was doing anything worthwhile with what little talents I have.
"But soon I embraced this license to lie and threw myself into a double-life, spinning yarns about my childhood and previous careers that even convinced me that I was having a good time.
"In this show I come clean about my life, reveal some of my wildest untruths and have quite a long conversation with Michael Caine."
He adds: "The audience can expect whatever they like really, it’ll have very little bearing on what actually happens in the show.
"But if they don’t want to be disappointed, it’s probably best to expect a handful of excellent jokes (quality over quantity), just the right amount of navel-gazing, and some cutting edge audio trickery.
But it appears Horne is not rerady to give up on the lies completely.
He adds: "I won’t actually be in the theatre for the show; I prefer to phone it in from my shed using Skype.
"There will, however, be a 12 piece mariachi band in the interval and the whole stage area will be turned into a giant aqua-ball-pool for the finale. And, once again, it’s called Lies."
