World War II landings plotter speaks at Royston Pike lecture in Walton
10:00am Friday 28th September 2012 in Freetime By Laura Proto
A woman who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to contribute to the success of the Second World War landings will be the guest at the next Royston Pike lecture.
Helen Mills will talk about her experience as an RDF plotter during WWII.
Her story takes her from an old airmen’s married quarters near Romford , to Uxbridge, the headquarters of 11 Group, where she went on duty and the ops room map was marked out with the landing areas Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “We are extremely grateful that Helen has agreed to share her experience with us and we very much look forward to hearing her talk about the role and lives of the women who made a real difference to the safety of civilians and influenced the RAF moves during the war.”
The lecture takes places at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse on Monday, October 1, at 8pm. Tickets cost £1.90 and are available on the door on the evening.
