West Side Story in Croydon

West Side Story, the classic American musical inspired by Romeo and Juliet, is coming to the Fairfield Halls, writes Nick Hitchens.

Set in New York in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.

The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working-class group. Things come to a head when a Jet, Tony, falls in love with Maria, sister of Sharks’ leader Bernardo.

Croydon Operatic and Dramatic Association (Coda) have picked the musical as their next major show, and the story of gang fighting on the streets may have a certain resonance among Croydon audiences.

With a cast featuring long-term member Dom Binefa as Tony and Coda debutante Charlee Simmons, the play runs from September 12 to 15.
