Star-studded opening night for Rocky Horror Show at New Wimbledon Theatre
3:40pm Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in Freetime By Lauren May, Chief Reporter
The 40th anniversary production of cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show attracted a stellar cast and audience, including the show’s creator Richard O’Brien.
Among the stars attending New Wimbledon Theatre on opening night on Monday were former Radio One DJ Chris Moyles, comedian Tim Minchin and Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell in EastEnders.
But the biggest surprise of the night was when O’Brien, also well known for his years as presenter of TV game show The Crystal Maze, took to the stage during the encore to partake in a round of timeless floor-filler the Time Warp.
The rock’n’roll musical, which tells the tale of a Transylvanian transvestite who makes science fiction history by creating the man of his dreams, first opened at the Royal Court Theatre in June in 1973 and was remade into a film in 1975.
Taking the lead as Janet is former Emmerdale and Waterloo Road actress Roxanne Pallett, who stars alongside Ben Forster as Brad who won the ITV1 series Superstar.
Former X Factor contestant Rhydian stars as a buffed up Rocky created by Dr Frank N Furter, played by West End star Oliver Thornton.
