A lottery-funded project will capture the historic past of Merton by collecting more than 15,000 photographs of days gone by.

Merton Memories, organised by Merton Council and supported by groups including the Merton Historical Society, the Museum of Wimbledon and Mitcham Camera Club, will see volunteers digitally scan a mammoth collection of historical images into a unique archive to preserve them forever.

Sarah Gould, from the council’s local studies service, said: "This will enable people in Merton and across the globe to search and view images from our collection, find associated historical details, submit anecdotal and historical information and place orders for reprints."

Some images to emerge have been of construction of the underground in Morden in 1926 and of troops recuperating after the First World War.

However not all images have been easily identified.

The team are calling on residents to help them identify this image which is believed to have been taken in what was originally All Saints School in South Wimbledon.

The project will be completed in spring 2014 when a new website displaying all of the images will launch.
