Another Wimbledon football legend has come forward in support of our campaign for sporting justice.

John Scales, who played 240 games for Wimbledon FC, including during the club’s historic 1988 FA Cup win over the mighty Liverpool, said he owed it to AFC Wimbledon's fans to support the Wimbledon Guardian’s Drop the Dons campaign.

This newspaper is asking Milton Keynes Dons FC, which was created after Wimbledon FC was moved to Buckinghamshire, to drop the Dons from their name.

Mr Scales, who lives in Wimbledon Village, said: “Football should be about community and, now that AFC Wimbledon is in the Football League, it is only right that MK Dons pursue their own legacy without our history.

“I owe Wimbledon, the club and its supporters, so much because I had some of the best years of my life there.

"Wimbledon made me the player I was and I am so proud to have been part of such a special set up.

“I see it as my duty now to support AFC Wimbledon and stand shoulder to shoulder with the fans.

"I just don’t get why MK would want to hang on to the Dons.”

More than 1,800 people have signed up to the campaign, launched in January, which has been debated in the House of Commons and several TV and radio programmes.
