On the evening of the 18th December 2012, we were treated to an evening of melodic delight. The superb musical, Mrs Humbug Sees The Light, was performed by the wonderfully talented Key Stage 2 students at Chepping View Primary Academy.

This hilarious musical extravaganza was re-enacted by approximately 120 students in total, aged between 9 and 11 years old. The choir was compromised of sixty Year 5 children and the vast majority of Year 6, approximately 75%, made up the cast. The remaining 25% of the Year 6 children were proportionally split, taking charge of the stage scenery, props, CD/sound, lighting and a small Year 6 choir.

They modernised the classic tale of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and presented it in a school setting. In this contemporary twist, Mr Scrooge was played by a feisty Headmistress at St Ebenezer's School named Mrs Humbug, who deplores Christmas so much so that she bans it to save on precious school funds. As the story unfolds, eerie visitors in the form of the School Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future all try their hand at convincing Mrs Humbug to change her mean and miserly ways, embrace the season festivities and loosen her tight rein on the school purse strings.

An excited Year 5 choir member, Ifra Khan, said in an interview after the show that it had been a thrilling evening and that she definitely looks forward to next year's Christmas Production, when she will be in the privileged position of being able to audition for a key role.

One devoted couple who watched their child sparkle on stage commented that they thoroughly enjoyed the evening and that it was a fantastic opportunity for children who may potentially like to pursue a career in performing arts to realise their ambition.

All in all, the evening was a splendid encapsulation of perfect Christmas cheer.
